Diamond Insurance Valuation for Engagement Rings: What Elevé Diamonds Buyers Need to Know

by Eleve Diamonds 05 Jul 2026

The Step Most Buyers Skip After the Proposal

You spend weeks choosing the right ring — the cut, the setting, the carat weight. Then the box is opened, the answer is yes, and somewhere between the celebration and the next morning, the ring goes into a drawer. What almost nobody does in those first 48 hours is think about insurance.

For buyers in Hyderabad picking up a lab grown diamond engagement ring from a store like Elevé Diamonds, this oversight can be expensive. A ring worth ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh — or more — sitting uninsured is a real financial risk. Theft, accidental loss, a prong that gives way mid-commute: these are not rare events. They are ordinary ones.

Insurance for a diamond engagement ring in India is not complicated. But it does require a specific document that most buyers have never heard of before they need it: an insurance valuation, also called an appraisal. This guide explains what that is, how to get one, what it costs, and which insurers in India will actually cover a lab grown diamond properly.

What an Insurance Valuation Actually Is (and What It Isn’t)

An insurance valuation is not the same as the price you paid. It is not your purchase invoice, and it is not your diamond’s grading certificate — even if that certificate is from IGI or GIA.

An appraisal is a professional assessment of what it would cost to replace your ring at current retail prices if it were lost or stolen today. That figure is called the Retail Replacement Value, and it is the number insurers use to set your coverage amount and your premium. Most appraisals determine this replacement value rather than any resale or liquidation figure — the replacement value is almost always higher than what you could sell the ring for.

Your IGI grading report tells an appraiser what the diamond is — its cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, and growth method (CVD or HPHT). The appraisal then uses that information alongside current market data to arrive at a rupee figure. The two documents work together; neither replaces the other.

For lab grown diamonds specifically, a qualified appraiser will base the valuation on the lab grown diamond market, not the mined diamond market. Lab grown diamonds share identical physical and chemical properties with natural diamonds, but their pricing reflects a different market. An appraiser who specialises in lab grown stones will base their valuation on this separate market — not on the price of natural diamonds of equivalent grade. This matters because an inflated valuation leads to an inflated premium, and an undervalued one leaves you short at claim time.

The appraisal report itself should document the diamond’s 4Cs, the metal type and purity (18kt white gold, yellow gold, or platinum), the setting style, any accent stones, and the appraiser’s credentials and signature. For a lab grown diamond, the report will also note that the stone was created in a laboratory setting, which distinguishes it clearly from a mined diamond — important detail that avoids confusion during a claim.

How to Get an Appraisal in Hyderabad

Getting an appraisal in India is more straightforward than most buyers expect. There are three practical routes.

Option 1: Ask your jeweller. Many reputable jewellers provide a valuation certificate at the point of purchase or shortly after. This is the fastest option. The certificate can be obtained from a noted jeweller and is accepted by most insurers for items of standard value. If you bought your ring from Elevé Diamonds, reach out to their team directly — they can guide you on the documentation that accompanies your purchase.

Option 2: An independent certified appraiser. For higher-value pieces, an independent appraisal carries more weight with insurers because there is no commercial relationship between the appraiser and the seller. Look for a Graduate Gemologist (GG) — the qualification awarded by GIA — or someone with equivalent credentials from IGI. Always ask specifically about their experience with lab grown diamonds before you book. An appraiser unfamiliar with the lab grown market may inadvertently benchmark your stone against mined diamond prices, which skews the figure.

Option 3: A gemological laboratory. Institutions like IGI, IGL, SGL, and GTL in India offer laboratory-based appraisal and certification services. IGI in particular has a strong presence in India and is widely accepted by insurers. IGI pioneered the grading of lab grown diamonds and continues to lead the field — their finished jewellery reports document all mounted gemstones, metal content, and purity stamps, which is exactly what an insurer needs.

For a lab grown diamond engagement ring in the ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh range, expect to pay somewhere between ₹1,500 and ₹5,000 for a standalone appraisal, depending on the appraiser and the complexity of the piece. Some jewellers include this as part of the purchase.

Choosing the Right Insurance Policy in India

Once you have your valuation document, you have two broad options for coverage in India.

Standard home insurance with a jewellery rider. Most home insurance policies in India include jewellery under personal belongings, but the coverage limits are usually very low — often capped between ₹50,000 and ₹1,00,000. This may cover theft or fire but typically not accidental loss or mysterious disappearance. For a ring worth significantly more, this is not adequate protection.

Standalone jewellery insurance. A dedicated jewellery policy gives you wider protection: accidental loss, worldwide coverage in some cases, and full replacement value without depending on the same claim limits as furniture or electronics. Several insurers in India offer this:

  • HDFC ERGO offers a Jewellers Package policy that covers gold and precious jewellery against accidental damage, fire, burglary, and theft. Their process requires a valuation certificate, which determines the sum insured.
  • New India Assurance provides a Jewellers Block Insurance policy covering losses due to fire, explosion, lightning, and burglary.
  • IFFCO-Tokio offers a Bank Locker policy with sum insured options ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹50 lakh and above — relevant if you store your ring in a bank locker when not wearing it.
  • PolicyBazaar and Paisabazaar both aggregate multiple jewellery insurance options, making it easier to compare premiums side by side before committing.

A few things to check before signing any policy: whether the coverage is agreed value (the insured amount is what you receive) or subject to depreciation; whether accidental loss while wearing the ring is covered; and whether there is a global cover extension if you travel internationally with the ring.

Premium costs in India depend on the total sum insured. Location also plays a role — insurers use location-based data to assess risk, and a policyholder in a dense urban centre like Hyderabad may see a slightly higher premium than someone in a smaller town for the same ring.

When filing a claim involving theft or burglary, you will need to provide an FIR along with your valuation certificate and purchase documentation. Keep digital copies of all three.

One Thing Lab Grown Diamond Buyers Should Know About Valuation Timing

Lab grown diamond prices have shifted meaningfully over the past few years as production technology has improved and supply has increased. This creates a specific challenge for insurance: the replacement value of your ring in 2026 may be lower than what you paid in 2023 or 2024, or it may have moved in the other direction depending on the setting and metal value.

Experts generally recommend updating a jewellery appraisal every two to three years — or sooner if you upgrade the piece, observe significant market movement, or your insurer requests updated documentation. An outdated appraisal can leave you underinsured if replacement costs have risen, or paying more premium than necessary if they have fallen.

For lab grown diamonds in particular, an appraiser who stays current with the market is important. The resale market for lab grown stones is still developing, and as manufacturing technology improves, replacement costs can shift more than they would for mined diamonds.

So: get the appraisal done within a few weeks of purchase, store the document somewhere secure (ideally digitally as well), and set a reminder to revisit it in two to three years. It takes less than an hour and costs far less than the gap between an outdated valuation and the actual replacement cost of a ring you love.

A Practical Checklist Before You Buy Your Policy

To make the process as smooth as possible, gather these documents before approaching any insurer:

  • Your IGI or GIA grading certificate for the diamond (confirms the stone’s characteristics and growth method)
  • Your purchase invoice from Elevé Diamonds or your jeweller (confirms the purchase price and date)
  • A formal appraisal or valuation certificate from a certified appraiser or gemological laboratory (sets the sum insured)
  • Photographs of the ring — front, side, and close-up of the stone — taken on the day of purchase

With those four items in hand, getting a quote from HDFC ERGO, New India Assurance, or any aggregator takes under 30 minutes. The premium for a ₹2 lakh ring will typically fall in the range of ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per year, depending on your location and the insurer’s terms.

If you are still in the process of choosing your engagement ring, Elevé Diamonds’ diamond engagement ring collection is a good place to start — every piece comes with certified documentation that forms the foundation of any insurance application. For those who prefer to browse in person before committing, their Try At Home service lets you see pieces in your own space before making a decision.

Insuring an engagement ring is not a romantic task. But it is a practical one — and for a piece that carries both financial and emotional weight, getting it right is worth the hour it takes.
